Research and methodology

In order to advance our TEAM vision - the paradigm of elastic mobility and collaborative strategies for travellers - TEAM will focus on four broad research areas:

  1. Development of advanced technologies to realise collaborative mobility concepts
  2. Development of infrastructure-centric technologies and algorithms
  3. Development of user-centric technologies and algorithms
  4. Europe-wide evaluation of leading-edge cooperative applications, integrating the above technologies

The expected results of this research will be incorperated into 11 TEAM applications which are used in the Euro-EcoChallenge to show the proper fulfilment of the TEAM objectives.

The above four research areas are addressed within four sub-projects, SP2 EMPOWER, SP3 FLEX, SP4 DIALOGUE, and SP5 EVALUATION respectively.

Each of the three sub-projects SP2, SP3, and SP4 follow the same methodology along five development phases, namely stakeholder and use cases identification, requirements and specification, architecture and design, development and integration, and technical verification.

SP2 develops the technological basis for the TEAM project. The main output will be advancements in communication technologies and cloud-based services. The basic idea is that SP2 delivers components which do not relate to a specific application, but which will be used by the applications developed in SP3 and SP4.

SP3 and SP4 are organised to deliver both enablers (data, tools and algorithms) and applications. While the enablers leverage the subsystems delivered by SP2, the applications combine the enablers to provide innovative cooperative services. SP3 focuses on the concept of “elastic infrastructure”, i.e. technologies and algorithms that take the desires and needs of all network users into account in real time for improving transportation networks; SP4 focuses on user-centric technologies and algorithms, which complement the SP3 efforts by realising massively distributed collaborative control and optimisation concepts among travellers.

Within SP5 EVALUATION, the TEAM system from SP2 and the SP3 and SP4 applications are implemented to the pilot sites, which are stops of the Euro-EcoChallenge, covering the cities of Athens and Trikala, Berlin, Gothenburg, Tampere, and Trento and Turin. The Euro-EcoChallenge is intended to demonstrate the robustness of the TEAM system and applications under different conditions, and to collect relevant data for later evaluation on impact assessment and user acceptance, to be performed within SP5.
